North York was first formed in 1922 as a township. Then it became the Borough of North York in 1967 while North York continued to become more urbanized until it finally became the City of North York in 1979. The city of North York forms the northern half of Toronto, the city of neighborhoods.
There have been efforts to intensify developments in the North York Centre area although many parts of the area still have a suburban nature. There are also many stores and high-rise office and condominium apartment buildings along the central North York.
